| Summertime Skin Care | ||
As the days grow longer and summer approaches with its outdoor activities, skin care becomes a concern. We literally wear our body’s largest organ – the skin – outside our bodies and exposed to the elements. What is the most healthful way to protect our skin from summertime solar rays?
Why We Need Sunlight We need sunlight. When we are exposed to sunlight, Vitamin D is produced from cholesterol inside the skin, strengthening our bones and immune system. Estimates suggest that 40% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. Even at mid-northern latitudes, just 30 minutes or less of direct mid-day sunlight in the summer can produce enough Vitamin D, if enough skin is exposed, such as wearing shorts and a t-shirt or tank top. Sufficient Vitamin D is challenging to obtain nutritionally as only a few foods contain significant amounts of it. Beef liver, egg yolks, canned tuna, sardines, salmon, swordfish, and cod liver oil supply Vitamin D. Sunlight, by far, is the best way to build up Vitamin D. The Problem with Sunlight The Sun produces UV (ultraviolet) light in three bands – UVA (320 – 400 nanometer wavelength), UVB (280 – 320 nm), and UVC (100 – 280 nm). The atmosphere absorbs the UVC rays, so we are not exposed to those. These UV rays react with melanin, which absorbs the UV rays as a defense shield, resulting in a tan. When we are exposed to more UV than the melanin can handle, we become sunburned. UVA rays will produce immediate tanning or sunburn, while UVB has a delayed effect that will produce tanning for a few days after exposure. Overexposure to UVA rays can cause loss of elasticity in the skin leading to wrinkling. Too much UVB is thought to cause or promote skin cancer. Even when sunlight isn’t directly contacting our skin, such as when under a beach umbrella, UV light easily reflects from the sand and water onto our skin – it’s possible to get a sunburn in the shade. Traditional tanning beds (not the newer red light and collagen beds) utilize both UVA and UVB, in much more concentrated doses than we typically receive outdoors, resulting in a rapid sunburn if not cautious. So while sunlight is beneficial to the body, too much is harmful, and we need to protect our skin. Sunscreen and Your Skin Sunscreen products provide “photoprotection” against UVA and UVB rays. They aren’t a recent invention. Erik Johan Widmark in 1889 discovered that quinine absorbs UV wavelengths, and within a couple of years others were developing it into protective skin lotions. Modern sunscreen lotions were formulated in the 1930’s and 1940’s, but it wasn’t until the 1990’s that they offered protection higher than SPF 15. They fall into two categories – chemical or mineral. Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds such as oxybenzone and avobenzone, which absorb UV rays as they attempt to enter the skin. Mineral (sometimes called physical) sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which reflect UV rays. Chemical lotions have lost favor in recent times because they are not “reef safe” – their ingredients are toxic to ocean life. NOAO (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) lists 11 common ingredients in chemical lotions that are harmful to ocean life. In recent years they have been banned in some places, including Hawai’i, Key West, the Virgin Islands and Aruba for this reason. Those chemicals are not harmful only to sea life. Our skin is an organ that absorbs what it comes into contact with. As Sun protection is a necessity in the summer months, it’s important to be very aware of the skin care products we use. The chemicals in sunscreen make their way into our blood stream, and many studies link them to a variety of skin and health conditions. As recently as 2021, Johnson & Johnson and Coppertone voluntarily recalled some of their products when it was revealed that they contain the carcinogen Benzene, especially in the spray-on products. Mineral based sunscreens have grown in popularity in recent years. Zinc oxide blocks UVB while titanium dioxide blocks UVA. Both are widely deemed safe for marine life. Zinc oxide doesn’t block pores and is safe for sensitive skin. What’s the Best Sun Protection? The best sunscreen that I have found is 3rd Rock Sunblock. Formulated by Dr. Guerry Grune, a PhD in Chemical Engineering and a world class surfer, 3rd Rock Sunblock actually nourishes the skin as it protects. 3rd Rock Sunblock is non-toxic, all-natural, produced with food grade ingredients and provides SPF 35. The formulation is also safe for kids. It’s inorganic so it doesn’t break down as it protects the skin. The formulation includes essential oils that nurture the skin during use. Frankincense essential oil promotes healthy skin, and Rosemary supports the immune system. The zinc oxide is used to treat burns, rash, and inflammatory skin conditions like acne, among other skin benefits. Since Dr. Grune realized that cancer cells develop in acidity, he ensured the formulation was pH balanced for the skin. Although formulated as a sunscreen for protection, 3rd Rock Sunblock is also good for any other skin condition. It can also be used as a night cream. Forgiveness Essential Oil
For Releasing Fear of Repeating the Past |
Fear of Repeating the Past is an emotion we are all familiar with to some extent, and is a Core Emotional Issue for the Gallbladder body type. Holding a fear of the past creates a focus on the past that can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, and can detract from our forward movement in life.
Using Forgiveness essential oil blend allows us to transmute this fear into Awareness. When we are aware of what we are doing, and what is going on around us, we are less prone to a repeat of the past. The way to Awareness is “I learn from all of life’s experiences.” The central theme of Forgiveness essential oil is Truth - Truth in the form of accepting the truth, honoring truth, learning from life's experiences, forgiving, supporting one's self, and accepting one's own uniqueness. Forgiveness essential oil addresses many emotions:
Forgiveness is also one of the oils in the Young Living Feelings Collection. If you’d like to learn more about the emotional clearing uses of these 6 oils, I have an online video course that provides hands-on demonstrations and detailed explanations of each oil and the emotions they help to release.
