| Understanding and Managing Your pH Balance | ||
What is pH? pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline (base) a solution is. Technically, it stands for “potential of hydrogen” – the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration in a solution. The pH scale ranges from 0 – 14. pH 7 is neutral –pure water. Going below 7 indicates increasing acidity, and going above 7 indicates increasing alkalinity, or base. Because this is a logarithm scale, like the Richter scale for earthquakes, each whole number represents a factor of 10 difference from the adjacent numbers. In other words, a small change in the number represents a significant difference. A change of only 0.1 pH represents a significant shift in hydrogen ion concentration. For perspective, the “health” pH range for humans is 6.8 – 7.2. Is My pH Balance Important? When your pH balance is normal, a myriad of bodily functions work properly and efficiently. Muscles contract normally, nerve cells communicate properly, oxygen is delivered to tissues, cellular metabolism is efficient, enzymes and hormones work optimally, and electrolytes remain balanced. In other words, a healthy pH balance supports a wide range of critical functions that maintain your body’s normal and healthy operation. How Can I Measure My pH Balance? If you took Chemistry in high school or college you may remember testing various solutions with little pH strips, also called “litmus strips” or a “litmus test.” These little strips of paper turned different colors when dipped into solutions, to instantly indicate the acidity or alkalinity level of the solution. These strips are widely available online and in pharmacies and are quite inexpensive. They are typically advertised for use with urine or saliva. Since your pH level varies throughout the day, I have found the most reliable method of testing is to use the urine already in your body when you first get up in the morning. With no recent food or beverage consumption, you’ll get your most accurate reading. Urine is naturally acidic as the kidneys excrete excess uric acid. Bad diet, and/or illness, will increase the acidity. So don’t be surprised if the reading appears acidic. pH varies throughout the day based on diet / consumption. It is also an indicator of potential health issues. However, it is NOT a standalone indicator for any illness, and a single reading should never be concerning. Should I Drink pH (Alkaline) Water? The body is incredibly efficient at maintaining a healthy pH level, particularly in healthier individuals. I generally have not found alkaline water to be beneficial for most people. Long term consumption of alkaline water over time puts additional stress on the body, which is tuned to maintaining a healthy level. Alkaline water does not hydrate the body as well as pure water. When your system is acidic, adding alkalinity isn’t a solution. As counter-intuitive as it may seem, acidity added to an acidic system turns it more alkaline. For example citrus, such as lemon juice, is highly acidic with a pH level of only 2 – but will actually decrease the acidity level. A few drops of lemon juice in your water is highly supportive for maintaining a healthy pH level. The best water to support your pH level on a long term basis is a pure, cleanly sourced water with a pH of 7. The two water choices that have tested best with most of my patients are Whole Foods 365 and Trader Joe’s New Zealand Artesian water. Hydrating the body with enough pure water each day is extremely supportive for a wide range of bodily functions. How Can I Manage My pH Balance? pH balance is most affected by dietary choices. Coffee, fried foods, and “junk food” will increase your acidity. If you’re going to have coffee, I have found that adding a fat such as butter, half-and-half, or coconut milk will help to mitigate the acidity. Use citrus regularly, such as lemon juice in your drinking water. And increase fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. The more you can avoid fried foods and pre-packaged junk foods, the better. In summary, despite the hype pH receives, it’s not really a concern unless you have significant health issues. Normally the body regulates pH extremely effectively. The best support for your body’s health is to consistently eat right for your body type. |

| Beyond the "Blue Book" |
When attending Young Living Conventions, I am consistently surprised how many tell me, “I have your book – but I don't know how to use it!” Which surprised me because I wrote it as a self-help book.
People who have used the Blue Book for years have expressed how they received such personal benefit and insight by going through the course and applying the material to themselves personally. The area that is generally the most misunderstood is the Core Emotional Issues for each body type. These allow you to get to the root of a person's lifetime emotional challenges. To answer this need, LeeYen Anderson and I developed our 12-week course “Emotional Wisdom with Essential Oils.” This is a deep dive into the world of emotions that really brings the book to life. This course goes far beyond the book, and has been described as a transformational personal journey by many participants. It provides experiential workshops, allowing participants to fully discover and experience the freedom of releasing these emotional patterns. Through a combination of video instruction and group interaction via Zoom, the depths and nuances of emotional patterns are fully explored. Hands-on demonstrations truly bring the concept (and results) home to each participant. We built this course based on our own career experience. Our intention was to offer this to Practitioners including counselors, therapists and coaches, and it does offer a Certification with exclusive perks. We have found that individuals taking the course have gained not only deep personal insights, but also tools for improving relationships with friends, family and co-workers. Experience the freedom of emotional release for yourself – the next course begins August 1st and registration is still open.
