Navigating the "Cold & Flu Season"

Winter, and especially January, is traditionally known as "Cold & Flu Season." There are factors that are present every year, like temperature changes; more sugar, pastries and alcohol than the rest of the year; and year-end stresses, including family get-togethers that bring up unresolved emotional stress and issues. These traditional stresses have been compounded this year with our political divisions and the isolation from the pandemic. I have also noticed an increase in our environmental pollution, as the skies are no-longer clear, but appear to be covered in a haze. I do see a direct correlation between the hazy skies and the symptoms people are experiencing especially sinus and throat irritations. Here are some practical tips on what you can do to navigate through this maze.

The Cold & Flu "Season"

Why do we generally consider January to be flu & cold season?

The traditional environmental reason is the cold temperature. The dramatic temperature change experienced from going from the warm indoors to cold outdoors is stressful on the body. Couple that with drafts and below freezing chill indexes, along with environmental pollutants and increased electromagnetic exposure can result in overwhelming the body's resistances.

During the winter we spend less time outside in the sunshine, with more of our skin covered with clothing, which reduces the amount of Vitamin D created when sunlight contacts our skin. Vitamin D3 strengthens the immune system by acting as a hormone in the body, and studies have shown that it is more powerful than vaccines in mitigating seasonal infections. The shorter winter days contribute to a general Vitamin D deficiency as well. My favorite source for supplementing Vitamin D3 is Ultra-D 5000 by Apex Energetics, which is a highly absorbable form of Vitamin D that also contains key cofactors in a cod liver oil base with an orange flavor. It does require refrigeration, and the dose is about a teaspoon daily.

Mitigating Environmental Pollution

I have been noting a general increase in toxic load from various sources of pollution, which taxes the immune system. This is where detoxification treatments are beneficial in clearing these toxins from the body.

The detox bath that is the most effective for the toxins we are currently dealing with is the Miracle II Soap and Neutralizer. Add 1 ounce (2 Tablespoons) of each of the Miracle II Soap and the Neutralizer to a bath and soak for 20 minutes. Frequency depends on your system and the symptoms you are experiencing. It can be done as often as twice a day, daily until symptoms subside. Typical is 1 to 2 times per week. If your body is extremely toxic, you may feel like taking a nap afterwards. Many people notice a clearing of their sinuses, head, skin, and general body aches.

If you do not have access to a bath tub, you can even soak your feet and hands in a plastic tub of water, using 1 teaspoon of each the Miracle II Soap and Neutralizer. I had a patient who has a dog that was suffering from a skin rash that found bathing her in the Miracle II Soap and Neutralizer cleared the rash.

The easiest detox is using Footpads. These adhere to the bottoms of your feet and work while you sleep, removing & collecting toxins from the body through the feet. Each package contains 10 pads, enough for 5 treatments.

Pure-Light bulbs are great for sanitizing your home or work environment. They break down 99.9% of bacteria, virus, and mold, and indoor air pollutants; dissolve pollen and other allergens; destroy odors without masking them; and use 70-90% less energy than traditional bulb. They are especially effective in the bedroom - leave them on during the day to cleanse the air, then turn off while sleeping.

Dietary Resolutions

Many New Years' resolutions are dietary because, beginning with Halloween candy, continuing through Thanksgiving celebrations, and Christmas parties and dinners, the holidays are often a time of consuming more sugars, treats, and other indulgences than usual.

A great way to clear our systems of this dietary "pollution" is a basic cleanse. In general, vegetables are the foundation as they are the best cleansers and can be eaten raw, juiced, baked, or steamed. I have found variations for each of the 25 Body Types, so I included body type specific cleanse programs in the Profile & Diet books. Some types do well to include nuts and fruit – noting that the time of day that is best to eat fruit varies by body type. I have found doing a fast or cleanse day of 1 to 3 days per week for 1 to 4 weeks per month to be the most effective and most supportive. Detoxing in this way takes the stress of digestion off of the body while providing enough nutrients to maintain blood sugar levels. It keeps you out of the starvation/deprivation mode while reducing calories. For example, here are the recommended cleanse programs for 4 contrasting body types:




Adrenal Fruit all day: watermelon, strawberries, cherries, red grapes, peaches, or pears or Vegetables: raw/steamed or Vegetable juice Salad: endive lettuce, green beans, bok choy, and garlic with lemon juice dressing or Fruit or Vegetables or Juice – carrot/celery (parsley/spinach) Soaked raw almonds, pumpkin, and/or sunflower seeds or Fruit or Vegetables or Juice – carrot/celery (parsley/spinach)
Gonadal (Cantaloupe) grapefruit, apple (Golden or Red Delicious) Steamed broccoli, carrots, bok choy, cauliflower and/or raw jicama, bell peppers (green or red), celery, carrots or vegetable juice— carrot/celery, (parsley), (spinach) White Rose baked potato; steamed green beans, celery, cucumber, radishes, spinach, lettuce, red cabbage or carrot/celery/cucumber juice
Pituitary Steamed broccoli, greens, spinach, and/or raw snow pea pods, carrots, celery Steamed green cabbage w/onion, zucchini, and/or raw celery, carrots Steamed asparagus, green cabbage, and/or raw bell pepper, jicama, carrots
Thyroid Watermelon including seeds and white part of rind or juice of carrot/celery/spinach Steamed asparagus, beets and/or beet greens, broccoli, and/or raw bell peppers, cucumbers and/or juice of carrot/beet/celery, carrot/celery/parsley/spinach Steamed globe artichoke or green beans, (onions) and/or raw cucumbers and/or bell peppers and/or juice of carrot/beet/celery, carrot/celery/parsley, (spinach), (carrot tops)

Beets are an all-around good natural detoxifier, and are supportive for all 25 Body Types. Add them to a salad, make beet-carrot-celery juice, boil them, bake them with other root vegetables, pickle them, make a soup out of them, eat them any way you like as often as you like.

More General Recommendations

Make sure you drink enough quality water throughout the day – ideally 1/2 your weight in ounces. If you weigh 130 pounds, that would be 65 ounces; half a gallon of water is 64 ounces. Since the kidneys eliminate 50% of the waste material of the body, drinking enough water is essential for detoxification. Adding a few drops of organic lemon juice helps to replenish electrolytes.

Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Zinc provide additional immune protection during cold and flu season, and men in particular tend to be zinc deficient. I have just added ZNAC by Professional Botanicals to my online store. This supplement supplies Zinc, A and C. The maintenance dose is 1 capsule per day, or if you feel like you are coming down with a cold, 1 capsule every hour up to 8x per day.

Make a saline solution using Pink Salt and your drinking water to gargle for a sore throat. Once you have cleared the phlegm, you may find yourself drinking the salt water. It is also good for your sinuses. You can rinse your sinuses using a Nettie pot or simply putting the salt water in the palm of your hand and sniffing it.

Exercise and movement help to activate the immune system, especially for Lymph, Medulla, Nervous System and Thymus body types. For other body types, exercise aids digestion and provides other benefits. Learn more about exercising right for your body type.

Peppermint Essential Oil supports the immune system. It can be inhaled, applied to the throat under the jaw over the parotid gland, and applied to the back of the neck and forehead; or, put a drop in your drinking water. (Stomach body types – use Spearmint Essential Oil instead).

Thieves Essential Oil is another one that supports the immune system, and can be applied to the bottoms of your feet, or inhaled. Oregano (a hot oil which is best when diluted with another oil such as coconut or olive oil) can be diffused to purify the air. RC Essential Oil assists breathing, and can be applied to the chest or inhaled during a bath or shower.

Rubbing sea salt on your chest and solar plexus in the shower will also help clear your aura and emotional body. It is particularly helpful when you are going through emotional stress or are around anyone else who is, which is basically all the time. I keep a plastic cup in my shower, get wet, rub on my salt, soap and rinse it off. I also add salt to the back of my head when I wash my hair.

Skin Brushing is something I do in the shower. It stimulates and moves lymphatics, which are located just beneath the skin. Using a skin brush that has short, stiff bristles, brush towards the heart.

Are You a Blood Body Type?

Women with Blood body type have expressive, receptive eyes that immediately draw attention to the face. Can range petite to tall, with medium bone structure. Solid torso with straight-to-defined waist, often short waisted. Average, elongated musculature with little definition. Initial weight gain is in lower abdomen, upper hips, waist, and upper thighs. Weight gain over 20 pounds is carried in torso including entire back.
Men with Blood body type can range from short to tall, with medium bone structure. Usually high forehead with receding hairline. Shoulders relatively even with, or moderately broader than, hips. Muscular definition in torso is moderate-to-difficult to attain. Initial weight gain is softer, relaxed musculature in lower abdomen, often covered with a soft layer of skin, as soft rolls or soft thickening of the waist.

White Angelica Essential Oil

A person's PASSION is what gives them the greatest sense of fulfillment, sense of value, joy or accomplishment. It's what gives life meaning. For the Blood body type, this is HARMONY. Harmony is the feeling that all is well.

The LIFE LESSON for the Blood, is "to bring harmony", which explains why Bloods often find themselves in areas of conflict. The challenge is to bring harmony into areas where harmony does not exist. Bloods are often aware of problems before the general populace, and can be like the yellow canary in the coal mines for identifying environmental stressors.

The MOTIVATION for change is Respect - from self and others. This means respect for self in seeing and appreciating one's own value, respecting others and being respected.

The essential oil for the feeling or experience of Disharmony is White Angelica. The other side is Balance. The goal is to transmute disharmony and in so doing bring about harmony. This results in a feeling of fulfillment, a feeling of knowing you are on your right path and fulfilling your destiny which is "to bring harmony." The way to transmute disharmony is through balance. Balance is achieved by looking at all sides of a situation, respecting other peoples' feelings, needs, and opinions as well as your own. The way to achieve balance is by being centered yourself, hence the affirmation "I am centered."

What motivates the Blood body type is RESPECT. "Respect me, and I am motivated to do whatever needs to be done. " "Help me find ways to respect myself." When emotions intensify, there needs to be a harmonious resolution or negative energy builds, resulting in personal health challenges, inertia, or destructive behavior. The MOTIVATION for change and forward movement is respect.
