How to Resolve Emotional Blocks with Essential Oils

The quality of our lives is dictated by our emotions. Two people can have the same experience; one is devastated by it while the other uses it as a stepping stone for growth and ultimately, inspiration for others. What determines the difference is a person's attitude, how they choose to deal with the experience, and their emotional state.

Patterns Begin with an Emotional Reaction

While the initial emotional state is shock, the next step is "What am I going to do with this? Where do I go from here? How do I handle this?" The choice is ultimately negative or positive. Negative can range from being overwhelmed and giving up, triggering hurts from the past, and ultimately choosing to fail. Positive is rising above the situation, asking for guidance, and taking a positive course of action.

The most common emotional reaction to something not going the way we want it to is anger. The physiology of anger is energy builds until it can no longer be contained and then there is an outburst or explosion. An outburst of negative energy is anger; an outburst of positive energy is laughter.

A good illustration of this is a traffic jam. Some people get angry, others accept it as the way it is and divert their attention elsewhere, while others tune into the traffic helicopter to determine if there is an alternate route and act accordingly. Tuning into the traffic helicopter allows you to get out of the situation, rise above it, and access it from a higher perspective. This is what occurs during prayer and meditation. It allows you to see the “way out” and develop a plan to get out of the negative and move into the positive.

In the case of anger, the affirmation is "My direction is clear" which opens the space for the next step to appear. Once you have your direction, energy is released, now that it has a place to flow.

How Emotions are Stored in Organs

Repeated responses of an emotion tend to build up and lodge in certain areas of the body that correspond to a like vibrational frequency. Chinese medicine – the 5000 year old practice of acupuncture - has documented that anger is stored in the liver. A person who is angry will have an imbalance in their liver meridian.

One of the ways to access the organs is through points on the surface of the body known as alarm points, or reflex points on the feet, hands or ears. There are also two points on the forehead above the eyes that can be used to access emotions. The seat of emotions is stored in the limbic system of the brain which is accessed through smell.

The Connection Between Emotions and Essential Oils

Essential oils are the life blood of plants. They hold a high vibrational frequency and increase oxygen in the cells. Smelling an essential oil activates the limbic system of the brain which is the seat of emotion.

Emotions are stored in the body in the glands and organs that match their vibrational frequency. For example, anger is stored in the liver.

Essential oils hold the positive frequency of the emotion. Smelling the oils in times of stress will help you connect with the positive side of the emotion. As Gary Young, founder of Young Living has pointed out, the ancient Egyptians were aware of the connection between emotions and specific essential oils, and used them for emotional release.

Example: How to Release Anger with Purification Essential Oil

Purification essential oil blend holds the positive frequency of laughter and can be applied to the liver alarm or reflex points, and the emotional points to release anger from the cellular memory. Smelling the oil and saying the affirmation allows you to release the automatic response of anger and gives you the ability to move into laughter.

This is the principle that applies to all of the emotions. When you find yourself in a negative emotional state, stop and ask yourself what you are feeling.

Applying the essential oil for anger (Purification, which is a blend containing citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, melaleuca, lavendin and myrtle) to the acupuncture or reflex point for the liver and the emotional points on the forehead will release the emotion held in the body. Smelling the oil releases it from the memory stored in the limbic system in the head. Feeling both sides of the emotion allows you to create a bridge or pathway linking both sides of the emotion so you are now able to choose which emotion you want to express.

Here is a short demonstration video for moving from anger into laughter:

How to Release Emotional Patterns

Each emotion has a negative polarity or expression, which most people are quite aware of. The positive polarity or expression is generally some vague thing out there somewhere. If you don't know what the positive side is, how can you expect to express it, especially when you are in the throes of the negative experience?

A good place to start is with a negative emotion that seems to show up frequently. Think of this emotion and ask yourself what triggers it, what causes this negative emotion to surface? This is the beginning of understanding, of identifying the pattern, and the beliefs that no longer serve you. The statement or "way out" is the affirmation that will shift you from the negative expression of an emotion, such as anger, to its positive expression, which is laughter.

If you are having difficulty identifying an emotion, you can pick an essential oil that you are attracted to or even repelled by and look it up in the Oils Reference section. Another way of accessing emotions is through the body. Go to the Body Reference or the Charts and find the area where you are noticing pain or discomfort. Or, Core Emotional Issues can be referenced to identify core issues associated with your body type.

I wrote Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils as a self-help book. Once you have identified the emotion, look it up in the Emotional Reference section. Here you will find the positive side of the emotion, the way out, the oil, the alarm point and the chart or location of the point.

The affirmation statement is the bridge from the negative to the positive emotion. It provides a "way out" of a negative emotional state, and gives a starting point to understand why the negative emotion is in a person's experience. It provides a way to access the spiritual side and change from the negative to creating a positive experience.

Using the oil and affirmation process at night before you go to sleep allows your subconscious to clear old responses during your dream state. Doing the process in the morning allows you to set your intention for the day. Use it during the day whenever you think about it or a situation occurs.

You can use multiple oils, one after another, and/or multiple emotions with the same oil. Other emotions connected with the oil Purification are: fear of rejection, being alone, seeing, recognition, violence, and negative or erroneous thoughts.

Are You a Kidney Body Type?

Kidney Body Types tend to procrastinate, forcing themselves to excel when under the pressure of deadlines

Kidney body type women are usually petite to average in height, with medium bone structure and shoulders relatively even with hips. They have a defined or well defined waist, and a strong, sturdy body with muscular thighs. Weight gain is in the lower body, beginning in the entire upper 2/3 of thighs, which can extend to inner knees. Little or no gain in the abdomen.
Kidney body type men typically have a swimmer's build, with broad shoulders and a long, slender torso, presenting a slender, muscular appearance. They can range from average to tall, with medium to large bone structure. Torso muscular definition is relatively easy to achieve. Generally not prone to weight gain; weight gain begins as thickening of waist with little or no gain in abdomen; abdomen gain as solid musculature.

Sandalwood Essential Oil
peace_calming.jpg

Sandalwood is traditionally used in meditation. Its sweet, woodsy aroma fosters a space for clarity and relaxation when inhaled directly. Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood helps create a sense of focus and clarity when diffused. Sacred Sandalwood from Australia inspires passion and promotes feelings of confidence and clarity during yoga and meditation.

All emotions can be divided into 2 categories, either Love or Fear. Anything that is not Love is Fear based. Most of the emotions are fear of _______. For the Hypothalamus and Kidney body types, Fear itself is a core emotional issue. A good definition of FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. The other side of Fear is Awareness or Faith. To have Faith is to Face It. Awareness is turning the light on it – seeing what is real. The way out is, “I face the unknown.” Sandalwood is the oil that holds the Awareness or Faith frequency and is applied to the 3rd Eye.

One of the core emotional issues for the Kidney body type that Sandalwood essential oil transmutes is the fear of Love. The fear of Love includes the fear to love – giving or receiving, the fear of being or not being loved, and the fear of not being lovable; anything that has to do with fears around love. The other side of the fear of Love is Detachment. Detachment is letting go of the outcome, releasing control of how love should look or feel; being in a receptive state of allowance. The way you get there is, “I allow myself to be real.” Fear is commonly said to be stored in the kidneys, it is actually the fear of Love rather than fear itself that is stored in the kidneys.

Inhaling Sandalwood enhances deep sleep, and may help remove negative programming from the cells. It is high in sesquiterpenes that stimulate the pineal gland and the limbic region of the brain, the seat of emotions. The pineal gland is responsible for releasing melatonin, a powerful immune stimulant and antitumoral agent.

Applied topically, Sandalwood can help enhance the natural radiance of healthy-looking skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and puffiness. When added to your daily moisturizer, this nurturing oil can reduce the appearance of blemishes and promote youthful-looking skin.

Applications:
  • Apply 2-4 drops on location, chakras, and/or Vita Flex points
  • Apply to shoulders and back of neck to unwind after a long day
  • Apply to your wrists or over your heart as a peaceful companion during meditation
  • Diffuse during meditation to promote feelings of spirituality
  • Add a couple of drops to a cotton ball and place in your car’s vents to inspire a relaxing environment when caught in traffic
  • Diffuse at home for a spa-like atmosphere that is gentle and uplifting
  • Mix 2-3 drops with V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex for a relaxing massage
  • Add to daily moisturizer to help reduce the appearance of blemishes and to promote the appearance of radiant, younger-looking skin
