As the busy-ness of Fall returns and schedules fill up, it's common to compromise on healthy eating, which can cause fatigue and other problems. So this month I offer healthful ideas for those eating on the run - whether it be school, college, work, or other activities.

The Medulla Body Type is featured this month, with Peppermint being the Essential Oil for their Core Emotional Issues. Peppermint is a highly versatile oil with many beneficial applications.

Also featured are the laminated Quick Reference Cards, which I introduced 2 years ago as a convenient way to carry the most essential nutritional information for each body type - to the grocery store, restauarants, etc. This has been especially helpful for families or households with multiple body types.

How to make school lunches as healthy and digestible as possible

#1 – Salt

Food that is prepared commercially contains heated, iodized salt which puts more stress on the body than positive benefits. Sea salt is better. The best choice is Pink Salt which contains Hawaiian and Mediterranean air dried salt. This is because in addition to the sodium (which is necessary to produce hydrochloric acid for protein digestion) it contains additional minerals. Minerals are fundamental building blocks for new cells, and are even more important than vitamins. Most digestive problems in children and healthy adults can be alleviated by simply adding Pink Salt. The average total salt required per person per day is one teaspoon.

What do you do when you are served food that contains heated, iodized salt? Add some Pink Salt. It doesn’t take much, so you won’t have food that is overly salty, but adding Pink Salt will neutralize the negative effects of the heated, iodized salt. I found a small refillable container with a secure lid that is easily carried in your pocket or purse. It is included free with any purchase from the website or the office. #2 – Vegetables or Fruit

Taking carrot or celery sticks, cucumber or jicama to eat with lasagna or chili will improve digestibility. I worked with one little girl, whose body type is Medulla, who could eat pepperoni pizza if she drank pineapple coconut juice with it. The Medulla body type has difficulty processing chemicals, so needs to eat organic chicken and grass-fed beef, rather than the commercial brands. Not that it wouldn’t be the best for everyone, it’s just that some body types, like Stomach, Adrenal, and Liver have stronger digestive systems and are able to detoxify easier. You are born with your particular body type - it does not change during your life - but it can become stressed, causing you to have difficulty digesting foods you were able to tolerate earlier.

The biggest difference between the body types is when they can eat fruit. The Stomach body type does not process fruit well for breakfast and can experience indigestion, heartburn or weight gain from eating fruit at this time, while being fine eating the same fruit for lunch, dinner or as an evening snack. The Heart body type needs fruit to help digest lunch, but fruit after dinner produces stress. The Adrenal body type, as well as the Eye, Pituitary, Spleen and Thyroid, can eat fruit anytime.

Since family members usually have different body types (they are not genetically inherited), I have created laminated Quick Reference Cards with key nutritional information for each body type. You can quickly see when to eat fruit and protein, as well as the complete food lists for each body type, making meal planning easier.

#3 – Snacks or “Emergency Foods”

Nuts, seeds, and fresh or dried fruit are easy to take with you, keep in your car, purse or at work. Mix roasted, unsalted nuts like almonds, pecans, or walnuts, with seeds such as cashews, pumpkin, sunflower and dried fruit like cherries, raisins, apricots - then add pink salt for a great snack. Use ingredients that are best for your body type based upon your supportive (“frequently”) foods lists (in your Body Type Profile and Diet Booklet, or Quick Reference Card). For example, if you are Pineal or Thalamus, delete the almonds and mix up your combinations. Ideally, raw soaked nuts are the best, but they need to be eaten in one, no more than 2 days when refrigerated. To preserve them and get the Pink Salt to stick, salt them and dry them on a cookie sheet in a 200 degree oven.

Another quick and easy way to assimilate protein after a workout is a Re-Vita lemonade. Juice a lemon or two limes, and put the juice into a quart jar or thermos. Add one to 2 packets of Lemon/Lime Re-Vita depending on how sweet you like your lemonade, and fill with water. I have found this to be more effective than Gatorade for after school practices. You can also make a Re-Vita “cookie” – this recipe is in your Body Type Profile and Diet booklet under Re-Vita before the calorie chart.

#4 – Peppermint Oil

If you have concerns about drinking tap water, Peppermint Essential Oil is inexpensive and easy to carry. One drop will help to neutralize chemicals found in tap water, while freshening your breath. If you’re feeling drowsy after lunch, a sniff of Peppermint and a drop tapped onto the back of the head will improve focus and alertness. If you’re hot after recess, sports practice or a workout, a couple drops of Peppermint on the neck will help to cool your body down.

Essential Oil of the Month: Peppermint

The core emotional issues for the Medulla body type are Restriction and Failure. The emotion of Restriction is stored in the Medulla. Its other side is Mobility, and the affirmation is “I am open to new experiences.” Failure is stored in the Thymus; its other side is Unfoldment, and the affirmation is “I accept growth.” Peppermint oil access and helps to release both emotions.

Other uses of peppermint oil include:
  • Rub 4-6 drops in palm, then rub on stomach for indigestion, nausea and diarrhea
  • Add a drop of peppermint oil to herbal tea to relieve indigestion and heartburn
  • Massage several drops on injury to relieve inflammation
  • Rub several drops on bottoms of feet to reduce fever
  • To stop hiccups, rub a drop of peppermint oil on each side of 5th cervical vertebra (located 3 notches up from large vertebra at base of neck
  • Inhale the fragrance of peppermint oil to curb the appetite and lessen the impulse to overeat
  • Drink a drop of peppermint oil in a glass of cold water to cool off on a hot day
  • Place a drop of peppermint oil on tongue to freshen breath
  • Place a drop of peppermint oil on tongue and inhale into nose and sinuses to relieve congestion from a cold

  • you are known for your patience, consistency and persistence – keeping promises and following through
  • you are unwavering in your activities and beliefs
  • you possess an intense sense of responsibility and remain loyal indefinitely, especially when you have identified with a group or cause

  • when stressed you go into overdrive and become hyper with nervous energy, and even scattered

Medulla body types have strong, durable bodies and can drive and push themselves, especially at work. They have environmental and health sensitivities to chemicals, antibiotics and pollutants. Their necks are prone to stiffness and rigidity. Mental rigidity can lead to indecisiveness if not controlled. They can easily build muscle mass with exercise, but require sustained exercise in order to lose weight.

With most people returning to busy, active schedules this month, I thought it would be helpful to mention the Quick Reference Cards again. I developed these attractive, laminated 8.5x11” cards as a convenient way to carry your body type’s key nutritional information to the grocery store or restaurants. The lamination makes them suitable for kitchen use during meal preparation as well.

These colorful cards include your body type’s ideal meal and snack schedules; your complete Ultra Supportive, Supportive, and Rarely food lists; and your key nutritional reminders for supporting your body type, or for losing weight.
