Superfoods for 2022 | ||
![]() “Superfoods” has been a buzzword for several years now, making its way into most contemporary restaurant menus. Superfoods are whole foods that are especially rich in nutrients, providing health benefits. I wrote an article in 2018 discussing 10 popular superfoods at the time. Here is an updated list of 10 superfoods that may enhance your meals – and your health. Turmeric Turmeric, considered the “Indian saffron” by medieval Europeans, has been used by various cultures for both food and dye since well before 2500 BC. The plant itself is hermaphrodite, not requiring insects for pollination. Its branches can be ground into an orange-yellow powder used to dye the robes of Hindu priests in India. As a food additive, it lends a bitter, peppery, mustard flavor. When consumed, its properties as an anti-inflammatory are well known, due to the active compound curcumin – which is also an anti-oxidant. It is also used as a treatment for a wide variety of digestive issues. Regular consumption of turmeric tea can increase bile production, which helps to emulsify fat, which can assist with weight loss. Moringa Moringa is a tree native to India. The tree produces green pods up to 18 inches long, giving it the nickname “drumstick tree”. All parts of the tree can be consumed. The leaves and pods have been used in foods and herbal medicines, particularly in India and Africa, for thousands of years. Moringa is very rich in antioxidants, minerals and nutrients. Studies suggest that Moringa may reduce blood sugar levels, cholesterol and inflammation. Moringa leaves, which are often ground into a powder for capsules or consumed as a tea, are high in iron, calcium, vitamins B6, A and E, riboflavin, potassium and magnesium. They also supply more vitamin C than oranges. Powders made from crushed Moringa leaves contain 3 grams of protein per tablespoon, which is a very high concentration among plant-based protein sources. Unlike legumes, Moringa leaves contain all the essential amino acids – which are necessary for muscle repair, energy production, and mood regulation. The list of health benefits for Moringa leaves is long – including support for thyroid, liver, digestion, and brain, among many others. Fermented Foods Natural fermentation of foods is slowly gaining popularity for its health benefits, despite having been practiced for thousands of years. Fermentation of foods such as vegetables is a process of multiplying the good bacteria lactobacillus within the vegetables to break down the ingredient, digesting the natural sugars and converting them into lactic acid, which preserves the food. This creates a tangy flavor and keeps the growth of “bad” bacteria to a minimum. Popular examples are kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut. The primary benefit of fermented foods is that they are a strong probiotic. We need lots of “good” bacteria for a healthy biome to digest food and absorb nutrients. The antibiotics, pesticides and chlorinated water of modern diets create deficiencies of healthy bacteria in our bodies. By absorbing nutrients better, we experience higher energy levels, reduced food allergies (such as gluten or lactose intolerance), and even reduction in obesity. Fermented foods are also high in vitamin K2 and several B vitamins, in addition to bolstering the immune system. They are also among the strongest chelators – foods that bind to harmful toxins such as mercury, enabling the body to more easily remove them. Ancient Grains Interest in ancient grains has been growing in popularity lately. Also called “heritage grains”, as they have been globally cultivated for millennia, these are plants which are rich in protein and trace vitamins. They are cereals and seeds high in magnesium, potassium, iron, essential vitamins (particularly B vitamins), fibers and antioxidants. Many of them are also gluten-free. While there isn’t an official list of specific grains that fit this category, the popular ones are quinoa, millet, sorghum, amaranth, teff, and chia seeds – all of which are gluten-free. In addition to the nutrients listed above, these grains provide high levels of zinc and omega-3. Amaranth packs 9 grams of protein per cup, and can be prepared as oatmeal, used as flour for pizza or gluten-free bread, or tossed into salad. Amaranth can be consumed frequently (3 – 7 meals per week) by Adrenal, Eye, Heart, Intestinal, Liver, Lung and Spleen body types, and moderately (1 – 2 meals per week) by all other body types. Millet can be tossed into salad, steamed like rice, or cooked as a creamy couscous. Its high magnesium content provides heart health benefits including lower blood pressure. Sorghum refers to a family of grasses, only one of which is harvested for human consumption. It is very high in dietary fiber, and helps to regulate blood sugar and increase circulation. Sorghum can also be used as a sweetener, frequently by the Medulla body type and moderately by all other types. As a grain, sorghum can be consumed frequently by Adrenal and Lung body types, and moderately by all others. Ancient grains provide an alternative to modern wheat and corn, which are high in gluten and mostly GMO in the USA. Hemp Seeds Hemp, which is legal to grow in the USA only since 2018, has been used for a variety of purposes since ancient times. Gutenberg printed his first Bible on hemp paper in 1455, as were the first two drafts of the US Declaration of Independence. The plant is used for a wide range of non-food uses. Nutritionally, hemp seeds are rich in protein, providing 9 grams of plant protein per 3 tablespoons. This is considerably higher than chia seeds and flax seeds. Hemp seeds are a strong source of vitamin E, and minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc. Hemp seeds may be consumed raw, cooked or roasted. They have a nutty, woody flavor and are often simply mixed into various foods. They can be made into foods such as hummus, and hemp oil can be used as a replacement oil in many recipes, or made into hemp butter. Hemp seed oil is used in Chinese medicine. Consumption of hemp seeds is linked to improved digestion, reduction of heart disease, and other health benefits. Bone Broth The benefits of bone broth are no secret. It is an ideally healthful food because of its ability to rebuild the gut. Many cultures have soup as a fundamental part of their diet, which is generally bone/meat broth based. Bone broth is commonly beef, chicken or fish based. Emphasize the varieties that best support your body type. For example, if you are an Adrenal, use chicken or fish bone broth, since beef can over stimulate the adrenal glands. If you are a Stomach, beef broth is an ideal choice, with chicken and/or fish to add variety. Beets Beets support the liver and are fantastic cleansers. There are five body types (Eye, Heart, Skin, Spleen, and Thyroid) for which beets are Ultra-Supportive whether they are Healthy or Sensitive, meaning they can beneficially be eaten up to seven times weekly even when stressed. For three body types (Balanced, Intestinal, and Kidney), beets are a Rarely food, meaning they are best limited to once per month, when these body types are stressed or sensitive. Salmon Salmon is an excellent source of the essential fatty acids EPA/DHA. Make sure the salmon is wild caught and not farm raised. Farm raised salmon has only half the omega-3 levels of wild caught, due to being fed grains and legumes. Salmon is a frequently food for Stomach body types regardless of whether they are Healthy or Sensitive. Salmon is a rarely food only for Spleen body types, when they are Sensitive. The other 23 body types can eat salmon in moderation – meaning 1 to 2 times per week – or frequently – 3 to 7 times per week. Coconut Oil Coconut oil is an excellent fat source that is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Coconut oil contains short- and medium-chain saturated fatty acids that have important anti-microbial properties. They protect us against harmful microorganisms in the digestive tract. Saturated fatty acids constitute at least 50 percent of cell membranes. They give our cells necessary firmness and integrity. They play a vital role in the health of our bones. At least 50 percent of our dietary fats need to be saturated for calcium to be effectively incorporated into the skeletal structure. Saturated 18-carbon stearic acid and 16-carbon palmitic acid are the preferred foods for the heart, which is why the fat around the heart is highly saturated. The heart draws on this reserve of fat in times of stress. Saturated fats are very stable and do not easily oxidize (turn rancid). Oxidized oils are very toxic to body and can cause wide spread free-radical damage. The most predominant medium-chain fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid which is similar to fats in mother’s milk with similar nutraceutical effects. Coconut oil is one of nature’s richest sources of saturated fat which is needed to produce HDL cholesterol to feed the brain. Eating coconut oil has been found to reduce joint pain and to reduce total cholesterol levels. Coconut oil is not all the same. The best I have found is the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil by Tropical Traditions, which is made by the traditional fermentation method. It is made by hand from certified organic coconuts and has the highest levels of antioxidants. Coconut oil can be used by all body types, including the Stomach body types even though coconut itself is a rarely food for them. Blueberries Blueberries strengthen white blood cells, making them highly supportive for the Spleen body type. Blueberries (and other berries) are usually listed as superfoods. However fruit does have a high sugar (fructose) level, so the time of day when it can be beneficially consumed varies by body type. Seaweed Seaweed (and sea vegetables) are excellent food sources because they are high in minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. Nori seaweed, which is typically used in sushi, contains more vitamin C than oranges and is high in trace elements such as zinc. Some other sea vegetables include Norwegian Kelp, Irish Moss which grows abundantly along the Northern Atlantic coastline and is rich in iodine and sulfur, Bladder Wrack which is found in the Northern Atlantic Ocean and is high in iodine and other minerals, kelp which has been shown to reduce the body’s absorption of radiation, and Sea Lettuce which is high in protein and minerals including iron. All of these sea vegetables are found in a whole food liquid supplement known as Sealogica. In addition to the original formula, there is an Inflammation Tea formulation which includes an additional 7 herbs (Boswella, Yucca Root, Devil’s Claw Root, Hops Flower, Fenugreek Seed, Hyssop Herb, and Ginger Root). The Detox Tea formulation contains 7 herbs (Pau D’ Arco, Red Clover Herb, Oregon Grape Root, Burdock Root, Yellow Dock Root, Dandelion Root, and Garlic) in addition to the sea vegetables. If your body type is Thyroid, eating seaweed is supportive, but if you are a Gallbladder, getting your seaweed from a supplement source is better than eating it. Superfoods - Good for Everyone? Superfoods are supportive or ultra-supportive for most body types most of the time. However, even superfoods are not always beneficial for all body types at all times. Some body types are actually stressed trying to digest certain superfoods when they are sensitive. So the real answer, as with all food choices, is that the benefits of superfoods are individual per body type. To determine your body type, and receive your ebook listing the foods that are most and least supportive for your body type, take the body type test:
