Why Are There 25 Different Body Types?

Your body type is about much more than just diet or weight loss. Knowing your body type provides the key to proper nutrition and exercise for your specific body type, as well as a surprisingly specific and accurate personality profile. It also provides you with the core emotional issues for your body type, which can be released using essential oils.

Body type classification systems have been around for decades. However, the popular body type systems – such as ayurvedic, Abravanel, and somatypes – have only 3 or 4 different types, and claim that most people are some combination of 2 or more of the types, which can be very confusing. That’s because there are actually 25 different and distinct body types.

How Are Body Types Different?

What’s so different between each body type? The short answer is – everything! Your body shape, where you gain weight, and how your musculature responds to different exercise are well known physical aspects of body types. The best time of day to exercise, and the most productive types of exercise, vary by body type as well.

Foods that are very supportive of your body type may be stressful for other body types to digest, or the best time of day for consuming fruits, proteins, and other foods may be very different for other body types. Each body type has a different path to weight loss – most popular commercial diet programs work well for the Adrenal body type, but can actually cause other body types to gain weight.

The in-depth personality profile of the 25 body type system provides the biggest surprise to most. The feedback I most often hear is, “How can you know me so well?” The profile details your personality characteristics and motivations. It also identifies the core emotional issues for your body type, which enables you to release them with essential oils.

Why Are There 25 Body Types?

How can there be 25 unique body types?

There are 25 different body types because this is the total number of glands, organs and systems in the body plus one type that represents a balance between all the glands, organs and systems. Any one of these can be dominant, which is what determines a body type.

The body is controlled by the glandular system via the hormones. The strongest glands are the pituitary, thyroid and adrenals. The pituitary is the master gland that tells all the other glands what to do; the glands in turn tell the organs and systems what to do. Information comes into the body via the thalamus which acts like a mail room, sorting and sending information where it needs to go. Anything it does not know what to do with gets sent down to the hypothalamus, which takes the information into its cave and comes up with a plan that it sends down to the pituitary to implement. While we generally think it is the brain that controls the body, the reality is the brain is a data storage center, and the hypothalamus is ultimately in charge.

The thyroid gland is responsible for metabolism and is stimulated by sugar and carbs. The adrenal glands are the strongest glands and are responsible for secreting cortisol, necessary for the fight or flight response. Their job is to keep us safe and are stimulated by salt and beef. The adrenals and thyroid act as counter balancers for each other. When stressed, the adrenals create more heat – even giving rise to hot flashes, while the thyroid runs cold.

These 3 glands have distinctly different weight gain patterns, food cravings, eating patterns, and personality characteristics. As I started working with these 3 body types, I quickly found people who did not fit into these 3 profiles. Some people seemed to be a blend of two types, some were close, but not quite, and others had characteristics of all 3. I was introduced to another typing system that had 8 body types – the 3 types I had been working with plus 5 more including Pancreas and Balanced. As I worked with this system, I found the same thing I found with every other typing system I had explored and that was people who did not fit into the categories and appeared to be a combination type.

When I looked at the last typing system and Pancreas was a type, I thought, “if the pancreas can be dominant, why can’t the liver or spleen be dominant?” This opened the door to my exploring the other organs, as well as the systems like lymph and blood. One by one, I discovered different body types, each with their own distinctive profile, until finally there were 25. In 20 years, I have not come across anyone who did not fit into one of these body types, nor have I discovered any additional types.

I started out looking for the diet that would best support the body. I found different authorities and diet/nutrition books to be contradictory. I also found in working with patients, as well as my own personal experience, that a food that is good for one person was not necessarily good for another. I found food combinations and time of day fruit was eaten also made a difference. In testing different people, I found a common denominator, and that was the dominant gland, organ, or system. Here I found consistency, not only in the foods that best supported the body, the best time of day to eat them, and food cravings, but personality characteristics as well. Hence, a body type profile!

What's My Body Type?

Body type in some cases can be determined through physical characteristics and weight gain patterns. In other cases, personality strengths and challenges that correspond to the dominant glandular function are used to determine body type. Easy Environmental Detox with Pure-Light
Super Oxygen Light Bulbs

Rarely do I find an everyday item that has as many health benefits as these light bulbs do. Besides being energy-efficient due to their LED technology, they clean and de-odorize your home or office in ways traditionally possible only with harmful UV (ultraviolet) lights. They also:
  • Break down 99.9% of bacteria, virus, and mold
  • Break down indoor air pollutants
  • Dissolve pollen and other allergens

What It Does

These are LED light bulbs that fit standard (A19) light bulb sockets and fluorescent tube lights (T8 48-inch). They provide a full-spectrum white light without flicker.   • Uplifts – many suffer from SAD (Seasonally Affected Depression) during winter months in particular, when less sunlight is available. Unlike conventional indoor lighting, these bulbs deliver a full-spectrum white light that helps overcome SAD.

How It Works

The technology enabling Pure Light to deliver so many benefits originated with NASA. A special coating of titanium dioxide reacts with light to produce two super oxygen molecules called superoxides and hydroxyl ions.

Superoxides are produced by white blood cells and are used by the immune system to kill invading microorganisms. Superoxides are also used in diver and fireman breathing systems.

The hydroxyl ion exists in the atmosphere and acts as a more efficient “air detergent” than ozone. Specifically, it reacts with many pollutants called VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). It also attacks the porous cell walls of bacteria and viruses, destroying them using a process called cell lysing. This does not harm human, animal and plant cells, which have less porous walls.

Are You a Pituitary Body Type?

Do you exhibit a childlike joy and love for life? Is your head large in relation to your body? Are you stimulated by learning? Then you may be a Pituitary body type.


Celebrities with Pituitary body type include Jimmy Fallon, Sai Baba, John Gray, Lainie Kazan, Aretha Franklin, Albert Einstein, Michael Moore, Will Ferrell, and Steve Wozniak.

Are you a Pituitary body type? You might be, if:
  • You exhibit a childlike joy and love for life
  • You tend to make life fun – approaching it with a childlike openness and innocence
  • You are stimulated by finding ways to bring more joy and love into the world
  • You are logical and analytical, and balance your mental acuity using your intuition
  • You are stimulated by learning
  • You are generous and giving – often spreading yourself too thin
  • You are social and receptive – others readily cooperate with you

If this describes you, you could be a Pituitary body type.


Pituitary body types have medium-to-large bone structure, with a large head in proportion to the body. The head usually rests forward of the shoulders, with a high, wide forehead.

Pituitary women have an "apple" shape with a defined waist. They have a soft, child-like look with a rounded stomach, often retaining baby fat over entire body throughout life. Weight gain occurs evenly as soft rolls over entire body, including hands and feet. Initial weight gain begins in lower abdomen, waist, hips, thighs and knees.

Men with Pituitary body type are usually average to very tall in height, with shoulders relatively even with, or slightly broader than, hips. They have an average, proportionate torso with average musculature, and may attain torso muscular definition, although a natural soft layer may obscure. Initial weight gain occurs as soft, relaxed musculature over abdomen, with soft thickening at waist and under chin.


Just as the pituitary gland controls hormones necessary for a child's growth, Pituitary body types manifest the childhood quality of making life fun. They approach life with a childlike openness and wide-eyed innocence that makes them fun to be around. As the master gland in charge of directing the entire body, the pituitary gland has to be extremely responsible. Likewise, Pituitary types are naturally capable, responsible people. Lighthearted and creative, they are stimulated by new ideas and concepts, which they use to bring happiness.

Personality, Relationships & Career

The primary nature of Pineal body types is Mental / Spiritual. (Read more about the Points of Connection.)

Pituitary types are characterized by a childlike openness, curiosity, and creativity. They prefer mental over physical activity. They easily connect with people and enjoy them. With good verbal skills, Pituitaries readily communicate their thoughts and feelings. Sensitive to the feelings of others, Pituitaries are extremely tactful and diplomatic, excelling at “people skills”. Pituitaries tend to take things in stride, seldom reacting with anger or frustration. They are very forgiving in relationships until they have reached the point where they are finished. Once they have learned what they need to learn and feel complete with a relationship, it’s over.

Pituitaries have a high degree of mental acuity and clarity, which they balance through trusting their intuition. They are logical, analytical, and systematic with a natural aptitude for computers, including the mental programming of the mind. There is a flexibility to their intellectual precision.


Exercise for Pituitary body types is a challenge, requiring great personal discipline. For them, exercise helps to relieve stagnation. Mind/body integration such as martial arts, Tai Chi, tennis or racquetball are beneficial. Weight lifting helps build muscle, while stretching assists body awareness.

Nutrition, Diet & Weight

Pituitary body types do best when emphasizing protein for breakfast, and consuming the majority of calories by 2:00 PM. Variety and menu rotation are important, especially at breakfast. Avoid protein and grains for dinner, include vegetables, legumes, and/or fruit, and minimize dairy.

Pituitary is one of the body types that can thrive on a vegetarian diet. For more about body type and vegetarianism, see the February 2018 Newsletter.

To lose weight: reduce quantity of food, restrict bread and all dairy except butter, and exercise at least 3x per week. Have a substantial breakfast including meat or fish, wait 4-5 hours, have a moderate lunch, wait 6 hours, then have a very light dinner.

Core Emotional Issues

Each of the 25 body types encounters certain core emotional issues or lessons to overcome in life. For Pituitary, these are:
  • Aloneness - released with Aroma Life Essential Oil, "I embrace", transmutes to Acceptance of All That Is.
  • Abandonment (fear of) - released using Lavender Essential Oil, "I embrace all of life's experiences", transmutes to at-one-ment

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

The fear of wisdom relates to the fear of experiencing something new. It is the unwillingness to move out of your "safe" comfort zone. It is the unwillingness to learn through and from your experiences. Wisdom is the clarification of knowledge, with the experience of knowing how to apply it that leads to illumination. Illumination is bringing light into the darkness of limitation. Limitation shows up as any aspect of your life that is not working.

The way to move out of your limitations is through embracing wisdom and this is done by facing the fear. The definition of fear is false evidence appearing real, which means that fear is an illusion. To break through it, use the affirmation, "face the fear". Applying the essential oil ylang ylang to the pituitary alarm points and the emotional points on the forehead along with smelling it, accesses the limbic system of the brain which is the seat of emotions.

Accessing the seat of the emotions allows one to release limiting emotions at a cellular level. Feeling both sides of an emotion gives one the emotional experience and accesses the emotional body. The affirmation or "way out" provides the answer, the mental understanding and the spiritual lesson of the experience. Applying the oil, connecting with the emotions and the affirmation before you go to sleep allows your subconscious to do the work while you are sleeping. Working with the emotion and/or emotions in the morning sets the tone for the day. Working with all the emotions associated with a particular oil clears related aspects of the pattern. You can also include other emotions with other oils as they come to your awareness.

The other emotions associated with Ylang Ylang are Drained and Possessiveness. While Drained, Exhaustion and Tired are similar, there are different aspects associated with each one. Exhaustion is stored in the muscles and physical in nature with the “way out” being “I nurture myself” meaning take care of yourself. Tired is deeper with on internal connection at the pancreatic duct, and “I am renewed” is the way to being Rejuvenated. Drained is connected with the Heart Strings and is emotional/spiritual in nature. Drained comes when you are giving too much of your own energy rather than being a channel for Universal/God/Source energy. The way to move from Drained to Complete is “I am open to Source.”

Possessiveness is associated with the 5th Chakra located at the laryngeal prominence. Scarcity also resides at the laryngeal prominence, and the fear of speaking out is found at the throat. The other side of Possessiveness is Sharing, and the way to move into sharing is “I express’. I created a Chakra Harmony DVD (also available to watch streaming) that takes you through a step-by-step chakra clearing. Once you have gone through it, you can use the oil for the specific chakra or chakras that are out of balance, or do the 8th chakra to quickly balance your entire system. Another way to balance your chakras is to play the DVD in the background as you are getting ready in the morning. The way emotions get into the body is through the chakras.

Ylang ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata) has a sweet, flowery fragrance. Its petals are often strewn across wedding beds in Indonesia. It has long been used in skin and hair care products, especially in Asia, where it is used to promote luxurious hair. Its name means “flower of flowers”.

Ylang ylang promotes calming and a sense of relaxation, as it helps release anger, tension, low self-esteem, and irritability. It helps balance male-female energies, enhances spiritual attunement, increases mental focus, and restores peace and confidence.
