LeeYen Anderson and I will be co-hosting an essential oils workshop again this year in Salt Lake City in conjunction with the Young Living Convention.

Saturday, July 15, 2023
2:00 – 4:00 PM Mountain Time
Salt Lake Marriott Downtown at City Creek, Salon F (Ground Floor)
*** Attend In-Person or via Zoom ***

Our focus this year will be to provide you with tools in support of your journey as a Young Living Brand Partner, and the emotional phases you encounter during your journey.

Join us as we discuss the metaphorical cycles of taking this journey – birth, growth, maturity, decay, death and rebirth. Together we will address the emotions that occur at each stage in this journey – hands-on exercises using essential oils based on my technique from “Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils.”

Known by many as the "Blue Book", "Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils" was first published in 1998, and the 25th Anniversary Edition - complete with many new and updated Oils and Emotions - will be launched at the workshop.

Be the first to learn which emotion is cleared using Ignite Essential Oil, Young Living's newest blend.

For in-person attendees, itovi will be offerings scans from 1:00 - 2:00, the hour before the workshop begins.

There will be gifts and prizes for both in-person and Zoom attendees.

For those attending in-person, the essential oils used in the workshop will be provided. Zoom attendees will receive an email prior to the workshop listing the oils to be used.

I hope to see you there!

How Much Sugar is OK?

Would it surprise you to know that you could not survive without sugar? Although sugar has gotten a “bad rap” for overall health, completely excluding it from your diet could be problematic for your vitality, if not your health. The key is knowing how to balance the appropriate amount – and type – of sugar into your eating plan.

Types and Sources of Sugar

There are 2 kinds of sugar – naturally occurring in foods, and added sugars such as refined cane sugar. Naturally occurring sugars are found in fruit, grains, vegetables, dairy, and alcohol. Added sugars include refined cane sugar, as well as corn syrup, rice syrup, honey, molasses, or other sweeteners added to food.

To understand the role of natural sugar we must understand its relation to carbohydrates. Carbs come in simple and complex forms, and in dietary fiber. Carbs are measured by how much sugar they provide. Simple carbs, or monosaccharides, provide one unit of sugar and quickly release their sugar into the blood stream. Complex carbs – polysaccharides – provide more than 2 units of sugar. These release sugar into your bloodstream more slowly and evenly than simple carbs.

Fructose, the sugar in fruit, is a simple carb. Fruit also provides fiber which helps counterbalance the effects of glucose and stabilize blood sugar levels. Sugar from dairy products (lactose) provides other nutrients like calcium and protein. The complex carbs in whole grains and starchy vegetables contain beneficial sugars as well.

Refined sugar is a type of simple carb. It provides quick, short-lived energy with little nutrition – “empty calories.” This category is not limited to “table sugar” or cane sugar. Syrups and even honey are refined sugars. Adding honey for sweetening is effectively similar to adding cane sugar.

Protein and fat are not sugar sources.

What Your Body Does with Sugar

Sugar provides energy to muscles and nervous system, helps metabolize fats, and keeps your body from using protein as energy. Consuming carbs produces glucose (blood sugar). The hormone insulin tells your cells to absorb glucose as a source of energy. A typical adult stores enough glycose to power 90 minutes of low-intensity exercise, or 20 minutes of vigorous exercise. Consuming carbs keeps glucose replenished.

The pancreas maintains balance of sugar in blood. As the kidneys filter blood, they take out the glucose they need for their own operation, then return remaining sugar back into the blood stream. Glucose not in use is stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen, or if excessive, in lipids in fat tissues. Any macronutrient consumed in excess ultimately may be stored in body as adipose (fat). When body and brain need energy boost, hormone in pancreas called glucagon causes stored glycogen to convert back into sugar and disperses into bloodstream.

Appropriate blood sugar fuels muscles during physical activity, and keeps the immune system strong. It also affects overall metabolism and body composition. Sugar can raise blood pressure levels and be sued to prevent blackouts, and it hydrates the skin.

Too little sugar can result in low blood pressure, low energy, and can negatively affect attention and thinking.

Excessive sugar (especially added sugars) in the body can elevate blood sugar levels and cause issues with the body’s insulin response; can lead to type 2 diabetes; can increase risk of heart disease; can trigger inflammation. Overconsumption can create extra insulin in the body for prolonged periods which can lead to heart problems. Other problems include weight gain, tooth decay, organ damage, and digestive issues and bloating.

Healthful Alternatives to Sugar

A popular natural alternative, coconut sugar is made from boiling the nectar of coconut plant flowers. Coconut sugar is popular in vegan diets, and does contain trace minerals but not enough to outweigh the fact that it’s basically equal to consuming cane sugar.

Stevia is extracted from leaves of stevia plant, is 200-350 times sweeter than sugar with zero calories – but has a bitter aftertaste. Monk fruit, or Lua Han Guo, is extracted from the swingle fruit and is 100-250x sweeter than table sugar with zero calories. Sweetness comes from unique antioxidants called mogrosides, which may have anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties, but not everyone likes the taste.

Honey has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties, trace vitamins and minerals; more calories than sugar, but it’s sweeter so less is needed; agave nectar dissolves easier than honey, has trace minerals but more calories than sugar.

White rice, white flour, and pasta contain simple carbs which easily break down into sugars in the body, whereas whole grains provide complex carbs that provide a longer lasting and more evenly released flow of sugar into the body.

Alternatives to sweetening foods are to season them – cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices can be used.

How to Balance Sugar in Your Meals

The best way to manage sugar in your meals is to eat foods with no added sugar, drink unsweetened beverages, and obtain your sugars from whole foods that naturally provide them. Avoid using even honey or molasses as sweeteners. Focus on whole foods.

Beverages containing fruit or vegetable juice often contain added sugars. Pure fruit or vegetable juice provide concentrated simple sugars, so these should be in moderation. Even fruit smoothies, salad dressings, condiments and sauces often contain added sugars.

Honey and maple syrup are technically natural, and their molecular structure makes them less glycemic (raise the blood sugar level more slowly than cane sugar).

If you’ve consumed too much sugar, drinking more water won’t expedite “cleansing it from your system”. The best solution is high energy exercise.

For your own personal eating plan to mitigate negative impacts from sugar consumption, review the food lists and eating guidelines in the Body Type Profile and Diet for your body type. This provides the best times of day for consuming fruit, grains and vegetables for providing the optimum, healthy nutrition for your body type without dieting. The sample menus will help you adapt an individualized eating plan that will help you maintain consistent energy and focus, and help to manage weight without dieting.

Are You a Skin Body Type?

Skin Body Types are sensitive to emotions, subtle energies and vibrations, they communicate through feeling and touch

Women with Skin body type present a soft, gentle appearance with a full face which is oval or round. They characteristically have a square, flat upper back with a relatively straight torso, and shoulders relatively even with hips. Height may range from petite to tall. Even at ideal weight, puffiness in hands and feet obscures tendons. Weight gain begins in lower abdomen, upper hips, waist, middle back, face, and upper thighs.
Men with Skin body type have medium-to-large bone structure and a round or oval face. They characteristically have a square, flat upper back. They have a thick, straight torso, typically with slender legs, and shoulders relatively even with hips. A soft layer of fat under skin covers muscle, minimizing muscular definition. Excess weight is often a problem later in life, and weight is predominantly carried in torso in the front. Hair loss pattern is frontal with rising forehead, or minimal receding at upper sides.
