Dear Readers,

Does your diet make you feel like your body is going through a withdrawal? There is a reason for that, and this month I take a look at the Food Industry, and how it consciously attempts to get you addicted to certain foods.

This month I also take a look at the Kidney body type, and what passions motivate them. The core emotional issues of Kidney body types are Fear and Love, as well as Misunderstood. Idaho Tansy Essential Oil can be used to release the emotion of Misunderstood, and I show below how that can be done.

As always, I hope and trust that these newsletters help you enjoy a happier, healthier life.

Health and Happiness,
Dr. Carolyn Mein

The Kidney Body Type

Are you a procrastinator? Do you need a deadline to get things accomplished? Do you function best when you are needed, particularly when there is time or performance pressure? If there is little or no pressure from the outside, do you find yourself creating it? If this describes you, you could be a Kidney body type.

Motivation

Distress is the motivating factor for the Kidney body type. As long as things are relatively balanced, there is no need for change or to do anything more than enjoy life. But Kidneys need the stimulation of new concepts and projects. They experience the “routine, day-to-day stuff” as boring. Not really wanting to do something, they procrastinate, feeling too tired, and have a hard time getting motivated. Craving variety, they welcome new ventures with extreme enthusiasm.

Passion

Kidneys are happiest when they are free to choose between several options. Their passion is to be flexible – to have choices. Flexibility comes when there are options, which only comes through multiple experiences. Variety is essential, even if it means doing something as simple as taking a different way home at night.

Core Emotional Issues and Life Lesson

Core emotional issues for Kidney body types are Fear and Love. The other side is Awareness or Faith. The way to build or strengthen your faith is to “face it” meaning, face your fears. The affirmation is, “I face the unknown. Love is the fear of not being loved, or being loveable, as well as the fear to love. The other side is Detachment, which is letting go and allowing, rather than trying to control. The way to experience Love and be Detached is “I allow myself to be real.” The life lesson is “to be real”. Being real means having realistic expectations of self and expressing the fullness of one’s self. Hence the need for multiple experiences.

Dominant Senses

Dominant senses for the Kidney body type are physical and emotional. Sensitive and expressive, Kidneys are in touch with their emotions. They love people and have a special gift for helping others connect with and communicate their own feelings. With their ability to listen and hear what a person is truly saying, as well as see viable, practical solutions, Kidneys make excellent mediators, counselors and teachers. Especially gratifying is serving others in ways that make significant differences in their lives.

The Reason Your Diet Makes You Feel Like You're in Withdrawal

Can foods actually be as addictive as drugs or alcohol? Yes, the food industry spends millions to make sure their products contain just the right amounts of fat, sugar and salt to make it addictive.

A New York Times article talks about how the food industry strives to create the “bliss point” to capture the greatest share of the market. It also covers a meeting initiated by the executives of Pillsbury and Kraft in 1999, and attended by 11 of America’s largest food companies, with the agenda of addressing the emerging obesity epidemic and how to deal with it. Michael Mudd, executive of Kraft, in his presentation said, “We are saying that the industry should make a sincere effort to be part of the solution. And that by doing so, we can help to defuse the criticism that’s building against us.” His presentation was answered by the head of General Mills, who said, “people bought what they liked, and they liked what tasted good." To change would jeopardize the sanctity of the recipes that had made his products so successful. General Mills would not pull back and he urged his peers to do the same.

The article goes on to say the top contributors to weight gain are red meat, processed meats, sugar sweetened beverages and potatoes, including mashed potatoes and French fries, with the biggest being potato chips.

In 2011, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that shed new light on cravings and weight gain. The high content of salt, fat and sugar reward the brain with instant feelings of pleasure. The sugar exists not as an additive, but in the starch of the potato itself, all the combinations needed to make the perfect addictive food. The starch is readily absorbed more quickly even than a similar amount of sugar. The starch in turn causes the glucose levels in the blood to spike, which results in a craving for more.

Michael Moss continues to write that in over 4 years of research and reporting, he has found a conscious effort to get people hooked on foods that are convenient and inexpensive. According to this article, sugar is pervasive and highly addictive. With our fast life style, and people skipping meals, snacks fill in the gaps. Their answer is to educate people to make better choices.

The negative effects of eating a diet high in sugar, salt, and hydrogenated fat are well documented. But what do you do when you are addicted? Start by identifying your problem areas. When do you want something sweet? Why do you want it? How do you satisfy it? Are you satisfied when you eat what you are craving, or do you find yourself having eaten a half a bag of cookies and still looking for something else?

Pay attention to what you are craving. If it is ice cream, do you want something creamy or are you after cold and sweet? A good alternative for cold and sweet is frozen cherries, mangos, or other fruit of choice. Not only is it healthier, it is more satisfying.

If it is creamy you are looking for, try kefir, yogurt or eating berries with small pieces of cream cheese. Vanilla yogurt with pecans will give you creamy plus chewy.

Cookies are flour, butter and sugar. Most people are sensitive to wheat, so a better alternative is oat flour. I found if I melted butter, added oat flour and a good salt, plus anything else I wanted to add, like fine cut oatmeal, almond slivers, pecan pieces, coconut, cinnamon and/or clove, I had a “cookie” that would satisfy me and still be healthy.

Eating a few raw, soaked or dry, roasted nuts after a meal especially with a good quality mineralized salt can help settle your stomach.

Fruit as a desert can provide the sugar that acts to transport protein across the blood brain barrier.

Are you eating because you need to chew? Eating mostly soft, cooked foods can leave you looking for something else to eat even when your stomach says it is full. This is when raw carrots, celery or even nuts are ideal.

Do you eat because you are bored? Or because the candy store is close to your house and whenever you go past it you feel you need to stop? Changing your routine for a few days so you can eliminate the sugar will often be enough to move past the cravings.

The goal is to learn to pay attention to your body. Your body knows what is good for it and what isn’t. Just because it is considered a healthy food, it is not necessarily good for you. For example, there are specific foods that are good for one body type but not another. Almonds are good for all of the 25 body types except Pineal and Thalamus. Olive oil is great for the Pancreas body type, but is stressful for the Blood body type. Grapefruit is excellent for Gallbladders, but not for Spleen, Skin, Balanced, Medulla, and Nervous System.

Knowing your body type validates what you intuitively know and fills in the gaps. There are 25 specific body types based on a person’s dominant gland, organ or system. Identifying your body type can open doors to nutritional awareness, self-awareness – and personal empowerment. In a nutshell, it shows the way to obtain perfect body weight and optimum health. Idaho Tansy Essential Oil
The emotion associated with Idaho Tansy is being/feeling Misunderstood. While everyone has had the experience of feeling misunderstood at times, being misunderstood is more of a life pattern or theme for the Kidney and Thyroid body types. It is linked to finding their strength within and standing in their own truth.

The other side of being/feeling Misunderstood is being/feeling Supported. Misunderstood is stored in the Vocal Cords and is associated with speaking one’s truth, while knowing you can do so and still be safe. The affirmation is, “The truth supports me.”
