Can You Be a Healthy Vegan or Vegetarian?

About 10 million American adults are vegetarians, with about 1 million of those being vegan. Some are successful, while others lack the essential nutrients to keep them healthy. Lacking essential nutrients can be difficult to recognize, and can often take 10 years to become readily apparent. It can show up as fatigue, weight gain, chemical sensitivity, and/or immune system breakdown which can express as a person manifesting autoimmune conditions. How can you determine if you could be a healthy vegan or vegetarian?

Difference Between Vegan and Vegetarian

While vegetarians do not consume animal flesh, vegans do not consume any animal products – including eggs, dairy products (such as milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, whey, etc.), and even animal by-products such as honey and gelatin. Vegans also do not use animal-derived products such as leather, wool, fur, pearls, and ivory. The term vegan was first used in 1944, while vegetarianism goes back to ancient Greece.

Pros and Cons of Veganism and Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism has been practiced since the 6th century BC in ancient Greece. In the Indian culture, the diet was closely connected with the attitude of nonviolence towards animals or tolerance towards all living beings. Many people choose vegetarianism because they are ethically opposed to treating animals as food. Others cite health benefits – including lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, lower cancer rates, sustainability, mood elevation, and even weight loss. Some studies have even suggested vegetarians live longer than their meat-eating counterparts.

In general, vegetarians and vegans tend to be more deliberate in their food choices and less likely to binge eat or choose empty calorie foods. Research has shown people who eat a wide variety of vegetables contain a greater diversity of their intestinal microbiomes leading to better health.

Conversely, others say that vegetarians are missing out on the proteins, amino acids, and healthy saturated fats present in meats. They also say that eating meat is sustainable and humane, and is the best source for iron, B12 and essential omega-3 fatty acids. For every study citing longer life expectancies for vegetarians, there’s a study making the same claim for meat consumers.

Are Veganism and Vegetarianism Suitable for Everyone?

The short answer is “no”. The 25 different body types have very unique and different nutritional needs. No diet works the same for everyone because each body type assimilates food differently. A vegetarian lifestyle will work well for some and could actually be harmful to others.

Of the 25 types, I find that half are not able to derive enough nutrition from a plant-based diet alone. Some body types require more protein, iron, or other nutrients that are more readily assimilated from meats than from plants. The body can absorb 15 – 35% of the heme iron in meat, but only 2 – 20% of the heme iron in leafy greens and beans, requiring the digestive system to process much more food to obtain the same amount of iron. And while B12 is found in eggs and dairy as well as in meat, studies find some two-thirds of vegetarians to be deficient in B12 compared to just one in 20 meat eaters. This number is much smaller for vegans.

The process of methylation is essential for the production of certain bioactive vitamins (such as folic acid and B12), as well as hormones, amino acids, red blood cells, DNA, RNA, and antioxidants in the body. Most of us have difficulty with methylation to one degree or another. This generally shows as a tendency towards anemia, and sluggishness in the digestive system. Difficulty with methylation comes from a genetic defect referred to as 5-MTHFR, which can be mild to severe. In severe cases, a person would readily show a B12 and folic acid deficiency.

Methylation requires B12 and folic acid supplementation. There are many forms of B12 and folic acid as different people respond better to different. formulations. The formulas that I have found that consistently work best for most people are Phyto Methylate by Premier Research Labs, and Chlorophyll Complex by Standard Process.

Can You Be A Healthy Vegan or a Vegetarian?

You should be able to thrive on a vegetarian diet if your body type supports it and you are not requiring additional protein to rebuild your body. If there’s a “NO” in the Vegetarian column next to your body type, you may find it very difficult to sustain your health and vitality with a vegetarian diet. Many body types that can be a vegetarian cannot sustain as a Vegan, and even those who can are a “SOMETIMES”, meaning that they can only thrive as a Vegan while their bodies are healthy and not requiring the additional proteins (and in some cases, such as Gallbladder body type, fats):

How To Be a Healthy Vegan or Vegetarian

Being a healthy vegetarian goes beyond getting enough protein and amino acids. Not all plant-based foods are necessarily supportive for you. Each body type has a specific list of foods that are “Ultra Supportive”, “Supportive”, or “Stressful”. Cucumbers are a “stressful” food for Adrenal body types – meaning they shouldn’t be consumed more than once a month. This is because they are more difficult to digest and take more energy away from the body than add. Although Adrenals can successfully be vegetarians, not all vegetables are supportive for them.

Are vegetables best eaten raw or cooked? The Adrenal body type does well with raw vegetables, because they are naturally high in sodium and need more potassium. Raw vegetables contain more potassium than when they are cooked. The Gallbladder body type has difficulty with a lot of raw vegetables and is better when the majority of vegetables are cooked or fermented.

Fruit is a whole food, so it’s always a beneficial food choice, right? Not necessarily. Fruit is high in sugar, and the best time of day to eat fruit varies by body type. This is because the fluctuations of energy vary from body type to body type.

It’s also helpful to listen to your body. After a meal, do you feel lethargic or energetic? Your body lets you know what is and is not supportive.

Determining your most supportive diet begins with knowing your body type.

Are You an Intestinal Body Type?

Intestinal Body Types have an open approach to life, as constant new experiences are vital to their continued growth and expansion

intestinal body type women are usually average in height although they can range in height from average to very tall, with small-to-medium bone structure and shoulders narrower than or relatively even with hips. Yhey can be average to short-waisted. They have a solid body with a layer of softness which reduces muscle definition, and a muscle weakness under the chin which shows as a double chin. Initial weight gain accrues in the abdomen, waist, upper hips, inner knees, thighs, and breasts.
Intestinal body type men can range from average to very tall, with medium to large bone structure. They have a thick, straight torso with a soft spongy layer which makes muscular definition difficult to attain. They frequently have a muscle weakness under the chin which eventually shows as a double chin. Initial weight gain shows up as soft, relaxed musculature in abdomen, and soft thickening or rolls at waist.

Palo Santo Essential Oil

Palo Santo is a high frequency essential oil from the same botanical family as Frankincense and Myrrh. It is a highly revered essential oil in South America, translates from Spanish as "holy or sacred wood" and is traditionally used by the Inca to elevate the mind and purify the air. It is often used in meditation for its inspiring aroma that can evoke positive influences, and has been used by indigenous peoples in ritual purification rites for centuries. Young Living’s Palo Santo is grown in Ecuador.

Palo Santo clears several emotional patterns including Anguish, Incompetent, Obliteration and Sorcery. It also clears Derailed and Limbo. Obliteration is the feeling of being blown apart, broken up, destroyed. Limbo is the feeling of free floating, lack of direction. Derailed feels like being “off track”, thrown off course, lost your center, frustration.

Derailed and Limbo transmute into Trust with the affirmation “I am divinely guided”, with Palo Santo essential oil applied to the 3rd Eye.

Diffusing 1 drop of Palo Santo with 1 drop Pine and 3 drops Lime essential oil are effective against bacteria, virus, and other pathogens.

  • Has an alluring, woodsy aroma
  • Creates a grounding, calming environment when used aromatically
  • Evokes positive influences with its inspiring aroma
  • Can be paired with massage for its warm, refreshing scent
  • Can be used to enjoy the outdoors annoyance free
