I know that many of you already use essential oils for releasing emotional patterns that can hold us back in life. So this month I wanted to offer something special - an explanation of how and why it works.

This month we also look at the Hypothalamus body type - what drives them and what emotions challenge them most. In particular Fear (which is also a core emotional issue for the Kidney body type) challenges Hypothalumus body types - and we look at Sandalwood essential oil as a way of releasing Fear, in addition to its grounding properties and other benefits.

Do you find yourself constantly going though "phases"? Do you prefer to totally immerse yourself in an activity or endeavor, continuing with a task until it is finished or until you reach a saturation point that causes your focus to change? Do you find shifting gears, particularly from mental to emotional, difficult? Do you gather all the necessary tools, study the directions, formulate a plan, and make sure you have enough time before starting a project? If this describes you, you could be a Hypothalamus body type.

Core Emotional Issues

Shame, fear, and betrayal are core emotional issues for the Hypothalamus body type. Shame is the emotion that is ultimately at the bottom of co-dependent relationships. It is the shame that will keep you bound - that deep dark secret that no one can ever find out about. The other side of Shame is Understanding. Understanding brings secrets out into the light of day; you see that you are not alone and can look at the situation objectively. The way to move from shame to understanding, is "I learn from all of life's experiences." This allows you to let go of judgement and look at what you need to learn or have learned from the experience. The essential oil blend, White Angelica, applied to the hypothalamus point located on the bridge of the nose and the emotional points on the forehead, holds the frequency of understanding and helps you release and transmute shame from your cellular memory.

Fear is false evidence appearing real. The other side of Fear is Awareness or Faith which translates as: face it. The way out of fear is faith; the affirmation is, "I face the unknown.” In Chinese medicine, fear is stored in the kidneys and is a core issue for the Kidney body type, as well as the Hypothalamus. While we all have all of the emotions, certain emotions are more of an issue for some people than others, hence referred to as core emotional issues. All emotions can ultimately be distilled into two basic core issues: Love and Fear. Anything that is not love based is fear; so most negative emotions are the fear of ______, like the fear of shame or betrayal. The area of the body where pure Fear is stored is the 3rd Eye, and Sandalwood is the oil used to enhance Faith.


Hypothalamuses are motivated by Fear for physical safety - from any source, including within. Many grew up in homes where their parents were either very critical or overly protective. Their inherent nature is self-contained and independent. Sensitive and fearful of failing, making mistakes, or otherwise losing their parents' support or approval, they often felt obligated to inhibit their self-expression, which can manifest as difficulties with self-disclosure or a habit of self-restraint. This is why, if they are to realize their full potential, they must be around people with whom they can feel safe. The more they are able to experience external support, the more open they'll be about their thoughts and the more they'll be able to embrace the changes that can enable them to realize their multi-faceted nature.

Life Lesson and Passion

The life lesson for the Hypothalamus is "to understand and master challenges." Their Passion - that which gives a person the greatest sense of accomplishment - is meeting and overcoming a challenge. Hypothalamuses are happiest when they can become creatively absorbed in their current challenge, whether professional or personal. Curious, sensitive and intuitive, they are often crusaders for causes they believe in.

Dominant Senses

Dominant senses for the Hypothalamus body type are mental and spiritual. Intuitive and receptive, they are able not only to explore and access information, but to manifest it in ways that often takes the knowledge to a new level. Once they learn to trust their intuition, they'll rely more on their own internal guidance for answers than on conventional standards or opinions. One of their special gifts is the capacity to get the insights or solutions they require simply by raising a question to themselves and then waiting for the answer to come to them or pop into their head. When they're able to join this innate receptivity or intuitiveness to their inborn tenacity, their success in any endeavor is virtually assured.

The Principle behind Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils

The quality of our lives is dictated by our emotions. Two people can have the same experience; one is devastated by it while the other uses it as a stepping stone for growth and ultimately, inspiration for others. What determines the difference is a person's attitude, how they choose to deal with the experience, their emotional state.

While the initial emotional state is shock, the next step is "What am I going to do with this? Where do I go from here? How do I handle this?" The choice is ultimately negative or positive. Negative can range from being overwhelmed and giving up, triggering hurts from the past, and ultimately choosing to fail. Positive is rising above the situation, asking for guidance, and taking a positive course of action.

The most common emotional reaction to something not going the way we want it to is anger. The physiology of anger is energy builds until it can no longer be contained and then there is an outburst or explosion. An outburst of negative energy is anger; an outburst of positive energy is laughter. A good illustration of this is a traffic jam. Some people get angry, others accept it as the way it is and divert their attention elsewhere, while others tune into the traffic helicopter to determine if there is an alternate route and act accordingly. Tuning into the traffic helicopter allows you to get out of the situation, rise above it, and access it from a higher perspective. This is what occurs during prayer and meditation. It allows you to see the “way out” and develop a plan to get out of the negative and move into the positive. In the case of anger, the affirmation is "My direction is clear" which opens the space for the next step to appear. Once you have your direction, energy is released, now that it has a place to flow.

To carry this one step further, repeated emotional responses tend to build up and lodge in certain areas of the body that correspond to a like vibrational frequency. Chinese medicine - acupuncture, which is over 5000 years old, has documented that anger is stored in the liver. One of the ways to access the organs is through points on the surface of the body known as alarm points, or reflex points on the feet, hands or ears. There are also two points on the forehead above the eyes that can be used to access emotions. The seat of emotions is stored in the limbic system of the brain which is accessed through smell. The essential oil blend Purification, holds the positive frequency of laughter and can be applied to the liver alarm or reflex points, and the emotional points to release anger from the cellular memory. Smelling the oil and saying the affirmation allows you to release the automatic response of anger and gives you the ability to move into laughter.

This is the principle that applies to all of the emotions. When you find yourself in a negative emotional state, stop and ask yourself what you are feeling. Once you have identified the emotion, look it up under Emotional Reference in "Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils". Here you will find the positive side of the emotion, the way out, the oil, the alarm point and the chart or location of the point. The process is found at the end of the Emotional Reference section and is also demonstrated by a video on my website. If you are having difficulty identifying an emotion, you can pick an essential oil that you are attracted to or even repelled by and look it up in the Oils Reference section. Another way of accessing emotions is through the body. Go to the Body Reference or the Charts and find the area of pain or discomfort. Core Emotional Issues can be referenced to identify core issues associated with your body type.

Bottom line: your life is what you make it. You have been given exactly what you need to get you where you need to go. You have the power to manifest your heart's desire and the tools to get you there. Blessings to you.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for skin revitalization, yoga and meditation. Recent research at Brigham Young University documented its ability to inhibit many types of cancerous cells. It is antitumoral, antiviral, and an immune stimulant.

Inhaling Sandalwood enhances deep sleep, and may help remove negative programming from the cells. It is high in sesquiterpenes that stimulate the pineal gland and the limbic region of the brain, the center of emotions. The pineal gland is responsible for releasing melatonin, a powerful immune stimulant and antitumoral agent. Can be grounding and stabilizing.

  • May be added to food as a dietary supplement or flavoring
